Committee job descriptions
Scripture: Colossians 3:12-17
Each committee member should
- Seek to walk with the Lord and to honor Him in all their ways.
- Let their conduct with others be a statement of their faith.
- Use their committee assignment to promote the kingdom and encourage fellow believers.
Benevolence:
The benevolence committee is tasked with helping those in need. These may include members of the church as well as those in the community at large. Help develop a system to keep track of people who have been helped. Ministers of spiritual needs encourage people who have been helped to affiliate with a local church. Determine if needs should be addressed on a broader scale, such as through Widows Might or church at large.
Budget:
Develop a budget for the church. Contact each committee or leader responsible for spending and determine adequacy of budget and adjust accordingly. Help promote giving. The budget is to be approved by the church body, no later than August; therefore the committee should have the proposed budget available for church review by August 1st.
Children:
Help leaders develop and execute plans for ministering to children and their families. Committee should meet as needed to plan and budget programs and events that will minister to children and their families to promote growth and evangelism. Children’s events may include, but are not limited to: Fall celebration, Christmas activities such as plays, parades and parties, Spring events such as Easter Egg hunt, Summer camps, VBS, and regular programming such as choir, Wednesday night, and children’s church on Sunday.
Facility Use:
Facilitate the use of church property to minister to the church family and community at large. Help maintain the calendar of facility usage including the administration of requests for use. Assist church leadership in developing ideas for use of the facilities to minister to church members and to reach out to the community. Work with the maintenance committee to assure that facilities are well maintained and in proper working order. Work with courtesy team to assure buildings are secure after services and other events.
Hostess:
Oversee the setup of facilities for events such as homecoming, fellowships and funeral meals. Receiving and serving food and drinks, setting up and taking down tables and chairs, clean up afterwards. The hostess committee is not expected to do all the work but to see that it gets done. For example, the hostesses are encouraged to enlist the help of others in setting up and taking down tables and chairs, cleaning up, etc… This will help involve more people without having to increase the number of committee members.
Kitchen:
Develop a list of materials needed so that the kitchen (as well as sanctuary, nursery and bathrooms) can be of useful service. This list will be checked periodically (especially prior to large gatherings) to make sure that all paper goods or other materials are on hand in needed quantities. The committee members are to oversee the purchase and stocking of the goods on the list and will be reimbursed by the church.
Maintenance:
The committee is to oversee the proper functioning and appearance of all church property. The committee is not expected to do all the work but only to make sure that the work is accomplished. (Ex: calling in A/C techs when systems need attention) The committee should also develop a “to do” list for work days and help recruit volunteers for clean up projects and also develop a “maintenance checklist” that can be administered with quarterly inspections.
Missions:
Promote missions through education and events. Help plan projects both within and outside the community. Promote mission emphases.
Nominating:
The nominating committee works with the Sunday School Director and other leaders to recruit volunteers to teach, lead, and facilitate programs.
Nursery:
Nursery committees oversees the nursery for the church. This includes maintaining a list of volunteer and paid staffing, overseeing the cleanliness and proper function of nursery furnishings.
Personnel:
This committee facilitates the professional staffing of the church through acquisition or termination as the needs of the church dictate. They are to help evaluate job performance and work with the administration of the church to resolve personnel issues.
Senior Adults:
This committee is to oversee the ministry to senior adults. Through outreach and special events, the committee will encourage the senior adults to become “Titus 2 Mentors”. The committee will promote fellowship to help strengthen a sense of community and family within our church
Youth:
Work with church leadership to plan, promote and execute programs and events for the junior high and high school students of our church. The youth minister will lead this committee to coordinate and maintain a high level of ministry for connecting with the youth of our area.
Women:
This committee is to oversee the ministry to women emphasizing special events to promote fellowship and a sense of community with the ladies of our church.
Camp Representative:
The Camp representative represents Mangham Baptist Church at the monthly meeting for Richland Baptist Encampment and keeps the church apprised of any issues that arise. Helps promote the encampment and its facilities among the members of our church. The camp representative has the power to vote on behalf of the church at the camp meetings and serves as the MBC proxy unless an issue arises that needs approval by the whole church. In that case, the camp rep would delay his or her vote until hearing the decision from MBC on the matter.
Committee on Committees:
This committee is charged with the task of staffing all other committees. The Committee on Committees also helps maintain a job description for each committee. The “Committee on Committees” should endeavor to help train each committee in their tasks.
